 PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

SOUTHERN METHODIST UNIVERSITY Post doctoral Fellow, 15 May 1999 - present
Research interests include:

SEISMIC ARRAYS CALIBRATION
Currently calibrating the NVAR seismic array.
Assessing the location capability for events near the Nevada Test Site.
Quantifying the effect of elevation, geology and source azimuth
on array locations and signal/noise level at search site.

LOWER MANTLE HETEROGENEITY
Using P, PcP and other deep phases to better constrain the
lower mantle heterogeneity described in previous studies under the Caribbean Sea.
Using events recorded at all available arrays:  TXAR, YKA, NVAR.
Working on alternative models for the shape of the anomaly.

INFRASOUND ARRAYS
I am part of a team working on noise reduction for infrasound arrays
and infrasound signal characterization and discrimination.

WAVELETS IN GEOPHYSICS
Continuing the study for developing a wavelet based method for
dominant wavelength identification in time series.
Extending the method to isotope data in ancient ice cores.

DISCRIMINATION STUDIES
Presently working on discrimination between simultaneous
and delay-fired explosions.   Investigating the dependence of Lg waves characteristics
on the type of source, using wavelet transforms and fractal dimension of the Lg envelopes.

SOUTHERN METHODIST UNIVERSITY Research Assistant, 1994-1999.
Research accomplished:

LOWER MANTLE HETEROGENEITY
Mapped anomalous slowness residuals (2-3 s/deg) and azimuth residuals
of P and PcP waves from teleseismic events, recorded at TXAR and YKA seismic arrays.
The residuals analyzed were statistically significant and had definite patterns,
with changes of sign between adjacent regions, and were not reflected in travel time residuals.
Observed large PcP but no P slowness residuals unless the rays were turning deep into the lower mantle.
Demonstrated that the anomalies beneath the Caribbean Sea originate in the lower mantle.
Using ray tracing through a 2-D section between 100 - 120 degrees azimuth, SE of TXAR,
from the surface to the core and up to an epicentral distance of 80 degrees quantitatively
described the heterogeneity. The starting model used originated in tomographic studies of
heterogeneity in the lower mantle in the region.

WAVELETS IN SEISMOLOGY
Developed a new automatic method for timing Lg arrivals using wavelet transforms
to decompose the Lg signal into its components localized both in time and scale.

WAVELETS IN PLANETOLOGY
Applied signal processing techniques and wavelet transforms to digital Magellan SAR
data from Venus to determine dominant wavelengths in various types of ribbon terrain.

SEISMO-ACOUSTIC GROUND TRUTHING
Using wavelets transforms, worked on array processing of meteors and space shuttle seismo-acoustic signals.

DIGITAL SEISMIC DATA PROCESSING
Worked on calibration of the TXAR (Lajitas, Texas) seismic array.
Improved the efficiency of the standard crosscorrelation method by using Fourier interpolation
to obtain a higher virtual sample rate, and using an L1 norm and a moving window.
Determined, to the first order, the attitude of the Moho discontinuity beneath TXAR.
