MINERAL SEPARATION LABORATORY

This laboratory provides facilities for the separation of minerals, glasses, and organic matter from geologic samples. Sample preparation materials include steel, agate, and ceramic mortar and pestles, screening materials for sizing crushed samples, drying lamps equipped with fans, and a hood with sink for chemical pre-treatments.

Two Nikon 7x to 30x binocular microscopes with flexible, fiber-optic lights are available for hand-picking samples. There are two Franz magnetic separators with variable magnetic field strength, sample feed-through rate, and angle and tilt of sample feed-through. Heavy liquid separation equipment includes separatory funnels and vacuum flasks. The mineral separation laboratory uses the non-toxic compound Na-polytungstate for heavy liquid separations.
